Volunteer

Enjoy a personal tour of the Africa Mercy conducted by Mercy Ships Founder, Don Stephens.

Volunteers are vital to the work of Mercy Ships and we welcome those who would like to serve the world's poorest people by providing their skills. Apply as a volunteer on a Mercy Ship, land base or support office, or raise funds and awareness for Mercy Ships in your local community. As there are over 400 staff on board the ship, there are many positions available - over half of the roles onboard are non-medical. Whatever your skills, experience and availability there's something for you.

Volunteer Testimonial

My name is Jenna Sym and I vounteered for 2 months as a dental assistant on the Mercy Ship in 2007. The 2 months flew by, which was quite sad looking back now. At first I didn't really know what to expect. Then on Day One, with over 120 people standing out the front of the local hospital where we treated patients for dental, I was shocked as I didn't realise the urgent need as there are a lot of dentists [back home] in Australia and it doesn't take long to see one. This amount of people would be a daily event and unfortunately we wouldn't be able to see them all in one day, so they would have to come back the next day and line up again. I saw so much in my time and even assisted when we went to the prison, where we saw almost 100 patients in one day and had no electricity. All we could do was either give antibiotics or take teeth out and it would just be one tooth. My time on the ship was fantastic and the people on the ship just made it such a warm environment; it really felt like home. But the best thing was the people of Liberia. They were very welcoming and appreciative of the treatment we were doing for them and made you look back and realise how lucky we have it. The smiles of the people of Liberia will always be in my mind and heart!!
