TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Mercy Ships is engaging in the following training and education projects:

Restoring Hope to Survivors (Mental Illness & Trauma)

Project Goals: Increase access to mental health care for the citizens of Liberia by increasing the availability of mental health resources

Timeline: February - November ‘08

Project Objectives: Train 20 health care workers at two health care facilities in Monrovia and provide follow-up training for 20 health care workers trained in 2007; provide a training seminar for 10 physicians and a second for 50 health care workers; improve pastoral counseling skills in 80 church leaders; and provide a three-day workshop for 250 up-country church leaders

Biomedical Technician Training

Project Goal: Provide increased access to health care for Liberia’s citizens by improving availability of functional medical equipment.

Timeline: February - November ‘08

Project Objectives: 4 persons (nurse, technician, or engineer) one from each of four local hospitals will be taught to perform clinical maintenance and repair of donated and existing medical equipment. Trainee technicians will be mentored on the purchase of parts or equipment. Equip each participating hospital with basic repair tool kits. Provide 120 university students instruction in basic principles of biomedical engineering along with hands-on practical application onboard the Africa Mercy.

Strategic Health Initiatives Program

Project Goal: To improve community health through community-based preventive health care strategies, with an emphasis on maternal and child health care.

Timeline: February - November ‘08

Project Objectives: Train 50 community-health volunteers in the target communities, focusing on disease prevention and health promotion principles, with an emphasis on child and maternal health issues. Increase the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets by women and children under 5 years old in the target communities. Provide community leaders the opportunity to coordinate synergistic projects provided by Mercy Ships in an effort to promote good health care practices for all citizens.
