| Mariama underwent female circumcision at 15 years of age. With other girls, she went into the bush for a sowey (elder woman) to initiate the girls into womanhood. | As a small child, Sainey continuously felt grit in his right eye. As the years passed, a small lump formed on his right eyelid.
